How Do I Manage if my Child is Sick?

How does a working mother manage if her child becomes ill?
We leave for work with a cheerful kiss and wave – and with guilt in our hearts – knowing our child would much prefer to be with us, no matter how wonderful the nanny or au pair.
Or do we harden our hearts and pack them off to school when they might be sickening for something because we don’t have enough back up at home and it would mean taking time off work?
Then, when we get to work there’s the worry that if we aren’t dynamic and totally focussed, our careers might be compromised.
The tug of war for our attention and the tightrope that women walk while trying to find a balance between work, family and home is extremely stressful. Many become anxious. Others suffer with insomnia. Then perhaps the glass of wine to calm the nerves becomes a feature, or we start to rely on anti depressants and sleeping pills – anything so we can keep going.
In my 19 years of running a busy homeopathic practice in Chiswick, I have seen many women who have valiantly tried to be super-executive as well as supermum, and in the end have suffered with a breakdown in their health. It is so important for a mother to look after herself and to ensure that she maintains her health and well being. This doesn’t mean we all have to turn into gym rats or spa divas. But it does mean that we have to value our role within the family and know that the quality of family life comes from the central pillar – the mother. When the mother is loving and calm the family reflect that, and when she is run down and anxious her family will reflect that too.
Though you will probably never feel 100% happy about leaving a sick child at home while you go to work, you will feel a lot better about it if you have acknowledged that this will happen at some point and have made plans. Make sure that your child feels comfortable and secure with the person who looks after them. Listen to your child if they say they don’t like their carer – even if the carer is a cordon bleu cook and a whizz around the house. Your child will not thrive if they are left with someone they don’t like.
So – how do we maintain calm when pulled in all directions?
- The first thing to do is to breathe properly. When we are tense we tighten up and take shallow breaths. This means that less oxygen gets into the brain and your thinking process is clouded.
- Then make sure you are drinking enough good water and
- Get enough exercise.
These three things make a huge difference in one’s ability to cope with stress.
If anxiety, insomnia or other symptoms persist, then take some time for yourself and make an appointment with a holistic practitioner – someone who will treat all the processes – mental, emotional and physical as integral parts of the person. Don’t put it off until you’re so unwell you are forced to do something.
As they say in the advert – Do it because you’re worth it!
