Are you eating too much?
With Christmas rapidly approaching I thought it might be a good moment to remind you of what an average portion size is for some common foods:-
Bread – one slice from a medium cut loaf
Rice/Cereal/Pasta – 1/2 cup cooked
Breakfast Cereal – 1 cup
Try to stick to wholegrain breads, cereals and pastas which are less processed and retain more vitamins, minerals and fiber.
Leafy Vegetables – 1 cup raw
Other Vegetables – 1/2 cup raw or cooked
Vegetable Juice – 3/4 cup
Apple/Orange/Banana etc – 1 medium sized fruit
Soft Fruits – 1 cup
Real Fruit Juice – 3/4 cup
Aim for approx 5 portions of fruit and veg each day, only one of which should really be juice as this has more concentrated sugar and less fiber.
Egg – one whole
Beans – 1/2 cup cooked
Nuts – 1/4 cup
Meat – 4oz (about the size of a woman’s palm.
